African American Dasien

Description

Another very non-canonical interpretation of Dasien. This was a warm-up sketch.

I was having a conversation about how to make characters of different ethnicity, gender, and sexuality. Um... My basic theory on these things are to just write what I know...which is to say that I don't really think about it.

If I changed Dasien to black or lesbian, I'd write her the same way as I do now. Loud. Enthusiastic. Loves terrible music from the 80s. That's just who she is. A male version of the character would also be pretty much the same. I admit, I find it more amusing that it's a female.

For an African-American version of the character, it's merely the physical appearance that changes. I made her a little shorter and a little heavier, and I made the face a little rounder with a wider nose.

By the way, I tried doing tight curls in the hair. It sucked. Maybe next time.

I actually like this design. A wiser version of my self at the beginning of the series would probably have considered using this. I think it's pretty.

I may use this design for a future character. Not the costume, mind you. The face, I mean.

A really good translation. Her face is so lovely.

And it's always great to see a WoC superhero whose design and persona doesn't revolve around the fact she's black. Even if this is just a switch for the sake of experimentation... I know many, many artists who would have added in a tonne of african cliches (regardless, you know, of whether or not the character is african...).
