Half-Ass Tutorial: Respectable Sexy Superheroes

Description

I'm rewriting this description, because the original was rather long, and people seemed to have drawn the wrong conclusion from it.  In fact, part of it was quoted in the comments below to make a counter-point that I didn't necessarily disagree with.

If you look at my gallery, you can see I do a comic which celebrates the sort of mix of action and sexual themes that came with the media of my youth.  I see a growing trend in today's culture to drive those things away, and this was my attempt to respond to that.

It's not that I have any moral objection to the character on the left.  In fact, there was a time I enjoyed characters who appeared that way.  I guess my taste for that sort of thing has diminished in favor of the sturdier woman on the right, which I also feel is an easier sell in today's market.  And because I want to appeal to as many people as possible, I'm willing to exploit my own varied tastes to draw in a larger audience.

The point of this piece was to show how one can still indulge in human sexuality without drawing too much ire from the politically correct brigade (hence the cartoon girls commenting on the art), but nowadays, I guess I'd say just draw whatever the hell makes you happy, and to hell with anyone else's agenda.  Rest easy knowing that I'm not inclined to spread any social justice rhetoric here.

There's a fine line between sexy and ridiculous. I think that most of the time, if you have to show off that much skin on your female characters, you're probably trying too hard, and there's not really anything to attract people to your work other than pure sex appeal.
Less is more when it comes to superheroine costumes - the less you reveal, the more people will want to see. :)
